I've had a good day today. Got some things done, read a bit, wrote some (even here), walked around town and picked up a few groceries. I love my days off. 3 of them every week, after working 4 consecutive 10-hour shifts. An easy gig, once you get used to it.
The TV abstinence thing is working pretty well, too. Not
complete abstention, but only about an hour a day actual viewing time (with the TV on for viewing, and not even as back-ground noise). There's nothing on anyway. Even the weather sucks. So this evening I was clicking the StumbleUpon button on my toolbar and was directed to
this. Hmmm ... this feels as if new vistas are opening with regard to some folks of my childhood acquaintance who include a former Wehrmacht rail station guard, a former member of Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth), and a man who was captured in North Africa in 1943 while serving as a driver and rifleman in the Afrika Korps. I remember that in those days, a scant 20 or so years after VE day, there was still some animosity toward anyone who had served the Fuhrer or his allies. I remember hearing people demanding "how could you do this?" of not only the German nationals, but also of my neighbors. It was beyond my comprehension at the time, when my Dad, uncles, and father of my friends were seen as "heroes" for their participation in the efforts to stop the spread of "Naziism" (sp?) and "Japanese Imperialism". (please take note of the " " marks - I use them to make a distinction between what was a reality at the time and what is now historical record.)
Check the link. Pretty creepy.
